Dragons Abreast Townsville has been an active Dragons Abreast group since 2004. A vibrant group of Breast Cancer Survivors and Supporters meet every Saturday morning on the Townsville Strand at 7am for social and technique paddling in the Coral Sea. We are also known as “Twin Titties”.
Townsville is blessed with weather that allows us to paddle all year round, however we take a break from paddling over the Christmas/New Year period when members may be away on holidays and we can experience unpredictable tropical weather conditions. We are often accompanied on our paddle by turtles, dolphins and other sea life.
We have three dragon boats – “Mater of Survival”, “Second Chance” and “Karen’s Wish” that live on The Strand, all wear hot pink covers and creating a great visual effect on the shore line.
In 2010, a sporting Dragon Boat Club was formed – “Townsville Dragon Boat Club”. The Dragons Abreast are a vital group of that club and members have the access to paddle socially or to extend themselves and participate at local, state, national and international dragon boat events. For further paddling information please access http://townsvilledragons.weebly.com/.
We take our role of promoting Breast Cancer awareness very seriously through creative media events, participation in Cancer Council Queensland initiatives and networking with community organisations to raise awareness about Breast Cancer. Dragons Abreast Townsville is now an established part of the Townsville community and we participate in local community events wherever possible to promote awareness of Breast Cancer and the importance of early detection.
Dragons Abreast Townsville are very fortunate to have received support from many parts of the Townsville community, including our foundation sponsors, Mater Health Services, BHP Billiton, Townsville Port Authority, Townsville City Council, Zonta Club Townsville, House and Garden and Arena Engineering.
In 2010 we gained a very generous sponsorship in the form of a no cost storage unit with Storage King Townsville, Hyde Park. http://www.storageking.com.au/hydepark/. Having the use of this unit enables us to keep all of our equipment in one secure location.
Come and join us for a paddle every Saturday morning right behind the Tobruk swimming pool on the beach – southern end of The Strand.
Meet on the beach at 7:00 am and be on the water by 7:30 am.
Meet a friendly new bunch of people, have fun and get fit. Then join us for coffee after paddling. We paddle for about an hour.
