Breast Cancer Support on Display
In a meaningful show of support for Geelong women and families affected by breast cancer, Dragons Abreast Geelong Juggernauts is hosting a mini 'Field of Women' on Sunday 22 October.
The event is part of Dragons Abreast Australia's National Paddle Month and National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Geelong based breast cancer patients, survivors and their family and friends have the opportunity to leave a personal message of support on a Pink Lady silhouette in the 'Field of Women' and have a closer look at 'Ruby' the Juggernauts' dragon boat.
Every day 42 Australian women learn they have breast cancer and seven will lose their lives to the disease. Dragons Abreast Geelong Juggernauts Coordinator Vijay Lachmi said the event is a powerful way to remind those diagnosed that they are not alone in their breast cancer journey and in their new life after treatment.
'A growing number of breast cancer survivor groups around the world have recognised dragon boating's benefits in rebuilding their lives and forging friendships.'
'Dragon boating is a great sport, no matter skills, fitness or age because in the same boat, people at different levels are doing the same sport and we encourage anyone interested to come down, have a look at the boat and have chat to our team.'
˜These events are a great way to link those people affected by breast cancer with their local community to help them feel supported. We hope people participating will find the event both moving and enjoy them as a celebration of life.'
'Although breast cancer care and knowledge has come a long way, women are still being diagnosed every single day who need our support. I invite the whole Geelong community to join us, and to take the opportunity to leave a personal message of support on a Pink Lady silhouette and find out more about dragon boating.'
Dragons Abreast Australia, has local dragon boating groups all over Australia, sharing the mission of encouraging wellness, fitness, fun and camaraderie for breast cancer survivors through the sport and promoting breast cancer awareness throughout the community.
Coming up to twenty years old, Dragons Abreast Australia is a leader in the movement for people affected by breast cancer; spreading awareness, empowering individuals, and educating on the benefits of an active lifestyle after diagnosis.
