From a doctor’s office with a diagnosis of breast cancer to paddling 55 kilometres of the magnificent Ord River is a long and tumultuous journey, but one shared by over 120 women this Sunday as they take on the Ord River Marathon.
The members of Dragons Abreast Australia and their supporters will be making their way from all over Australia to participate in this year’s dragon boating highlight – the 55km Ord River Marathon, in Western Australia.
While many of the dragon boaters have a formidable record of paddling overseas, in Florence, Canada and Hong Kong, the Ord River Marathon is a real bucket list item for many Dragons Abreast Members, who have combined the marathon into a holiday around Western Australia, Northern Territory and Uluru.
No strangers to early starts, the paddlers will begin their marathon below the Argyle Dam wall on Sunday morning. It’s not all paddling though, with well-deserved breaks for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea along the way, with an estimated arrival time in Kununurra in the late afternoon. Showing that there really is a fantastic life to be lived after a breast cancer diagnosis, the paddlers then party their aches away!
This year’s marathon is an exclusive event for Dragons Abreast Australia members but has been co organised with Glenn Taylor of Kimberley Action Sports, with all the boats supplied by the Kununurra Dragon Boat Club, the Ord River Dragons.
Crew members will regularly change sides and positions to prevent fatigue and keep motivated as they take in the ochre gorges, birdlife and freshwater crocodiles along the picturesque route, while they tick off their bucket list in a big way!
