Dragons Abreast Townsville has been an active Dragons Abreast group since 2004. A vibrant group of Breast Cancer Survivors and their Supporters meet every Saturday morning on the Townsville Strand at 7am for social and technique paddling. We are affectionally known as “Twin Titties” and have two dragon boats which allow us to take out up to 30 paddlers, plus sweeps if required.
In 2010, a sporting Dragon Boat Club was formed – “Townsville Dragon Boat Club Inc.” and Dragons Abreast Townsville members are a vital group within this club. Through membership of both clubs, paddlers can participate in local, state, national and international dragon boat events, either as part of a sporting team or as part of a breast cancer survivor team. It also allows for members to train up to 3 times a week if they wish to.
We have regular social events throughout the year with the goal of building teamwork and developing long lasting friendships as we strive to promote life after breast cancer. We will provide you with a lifejacket, paddle, seat cushion, coaching, and the best time of your life!
Regardless of your age or, fitness level, contact us via email at [email protected] or phone 0494 130 882 to arrange a come & try paddling session.
Training Times
Saturday morning – meet at 7:00am to be on the water by 7:30am for a 1-hour paddling session.
Our boats are located behind the Tobruk swimming pool at the southern end of The Strand. We usually go for coffee at the Tobruk kiosk after training, and if the ocean conditions are not suitable for paddling, we do a walk or exercises, then go for coffee afterward (or tea, smoothies, or health juices). Sometimes we don’t exercise!
Summer Tuesday & Thursday – meet at 5pm to be on the water by 5.30pm for a 1-hour paddling session.
Winter Tuesday & Thursday – meet at 4.30pm to be on the water by 5pm for a 1-hour paddling session.
These training sessions are with Townsville Dragon Boat club members and conducted at Riverway Lagoons, 15 Sporting Drive, Thuringowa Central.
