About Fiona Maguire

Dragons Abreast Canberra was deeply saddened by the passing of Fiona Maguire on 24 March 2025. Fiona died peacefully, surrounded by her family, after her journey with metastatic breast cancer. She was a gentle, fun-loving, and determined woman who lived her life with joy and laughter, always ready to share that with those around her. Fiona’s presence brightened every session, and she is missed dearly.

Fiona was an enthusiastic early-morning paddler, often joining the Tuesday 6am crew, and she encouraged her two sisters-in-law to join the team as well. Her love for paddling and her spirit of inclusiveness left a lasting mark on our community.

In her own words, Fiona described the serendipity of discovering dragon boating:

“I love being outside in nature and I love being on the water; being a fish sign and all. It’s little wonder that I jumped at the opportunity to try dragon boating… It’s so beautiful on the water and everyone is so helpful and supportive… My feeling of accomplishment when I improve my technique and paddle further is substantial. I feel confident enough now that I can appreciate the wonderful company, the amazing sunrises, the water, the hills and even the exhilaration of paddling in rough water. Thank you!”

Fiona’s joy, humour, and courage will remain with us always. She showed us the beauty of finding community, purpose, and laughter even in the toughest of times. Though she has left the boat, her spirit will continue to paddle alongside us at every sunrise.
