Maureen (Mawsie) Meikle Mackay

About Maureen (Mawsie) Meikle

On the 16th August 2013, another Dragons Abreast Mackay member, Maureen Meikle, affectionately known as Mawsie, sadly lost her long battle.

Although Mawsie was a member in Mackay, it was only in 2012 that she and husband Phil retired here to live.  In keeping with her mantra ‘Love you all’, her family and friends were lucky enough to celebrate a combined house warming/birthday party with her, when much to her delight she and Phil moved into their lovely new home in June 2013.

Prior to this they lived in Rockhampton but such was her passion for Dragons Abreast, whenever time permitted they would travel up to Mackay always allowing time for a paddle with us on Sunday morning before returning to Rockhampton.  Of course, the social aspect was the primary drawcard as she loved a chat and a cuppa with her buddies.

Rockhampton didn’t miss out – while there she developed a paddling team for not only breast cancer survivors but all those who have battled cancer in some form and this team continues today.  She also devoted much of her time volunteering at Vinnies.

However, it all started for Mawsie in Coffs Harbour.  She was a founding member of the Coffs Harbour DA team Titivators and while in Coffs Harbour became a counsellor for those first diagnosed with breast cancer.  In keeping with her love of fun, while at Coffs Harbour in 2004, she was very excited to appear as ‘Ms November’ posing in a bathtub of milk for a very successful fundraising calendar.

Our dear friend and DAM “Oarsome” member now paddles with the angels but is always with us in spirit.
