Paddling Back to Health – Lynn Heywood’s Dragon Boat Journey Posted on: 14 March 2026
Dragons Abreast Sydney paddler Lynn Heywood recently shared her inspiring story in That’s Life! Mega Monthly, highlighting the powerful role dragon boating has played in her recovery and wellbeing.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Lynn was determined not to let the disease define her future. Through treatment and recovery, she discovered Dragons Abreast, a community that supports breast cancer survivors through the sport of dragon boat paddling. Across Australia, these groups provide opportunities for survivors to regain strength, fitness and confidence while connecting with others who understand the journey.
Lynn quickly found more than just exercise on the water. She discovered a welcoming community of women who had walked a similar path. Training sessions, gym work and time with her crew helped rebuild her strength and confidence.
In 2022, Lynn took the next step and competed in her first dragon boat regatta at the Sydney Lunar New Year Dragon Boat Festival, proving to herself that life after cancer can be strong, active and full of new adventures.
Today, Lynn continues paddling with Dragons Abreast Sydney, celebrating friendship, resilience and the joy of being out on the water.
Her story is a powerful reminder that dragon boating isn’t just a sport — it’s a community that helps survivors move forward together.
